QUESTION OF THE MONTH: SEPTEMBER

THE FISHERMAN'S QUESTION

Hello, my name is Alessandro, and in view of my inexperience I would like to rely on you for the creation of a sufficiently high-protein bait to set up a series of canal fishing trips, as from this autumn I would like to devote myself exclusively to a minor water course with a good presence of carp, even of good size.

THE EXPERT REPLIES

Hi Alessandro first of all thank you for your trust, now I understand that you would like to make a bait with good nutritional properties to accustom the fish to the food for a medium/long period.

Well then, I would say that first we need to understand if it is feasible to make a bait of a certain type as opposed to another, and to do this we will first need to understand what the fauna of the waterway you are interested in is like.

This is because, should there be a good population of white fish, we might take one route; if, on the other hand, we were dealing with a body of water with a good presence of turtles and/or catfish - alas, increasingly common - we would have to make another decision.

Let's say that we are lucky, and we are dealing with a waterway with the presence of only a few whitefish, then given that this is the lesser evil and that their disturbance will begin to decrease as the temperatures drop, and given that we are talking about a long baiting campaign, we can think about using a fishmix. That is, a bait with a good percentage of fishmeal and therefore a medium to high biological value.

Here it is :

  • 20% YELLOW SEMOLINA
  • 15% GROUND DOMESTIC TTX
  • 15% TOASTED MICRONISED SOYA

This is the first part of the recipe consisting exclusively of flours of vegetable origin, a base that is good for many other mixtures and can even be used as a mix by modifying the dosage percentages.

We will now add the animal component as follows :

  • 10% MILK POWDER
  • 20% FISH MEAL 999
  • 10% TUNA MEAL
  • 5% PREDIGEST FISHMEAL

Here we have a good percentage of fish meal 999 which will be the basis of our mixture and which will provide a good protein supply, then we have the tuna meal which, in addition to a good level of protein, will also give us an excellent taste component. Finally, we add a low percentage of pre-digested flour which, in addition to its solubility, will also give a strong taste component.

Last part of our mix :

  • 10% RED FACTOR
  • 5% CRUSCA

Wanting to create a bait of a certain protein value for a long-term baiting campaign, we cannot but think of including a component that can help carp in the assimilation and evacuation phase. These two simple ingredients will do the trick.

For the liquid part, we can opt for :

  • 25 ml of SALMON OIL
  • 8 ML OF NORTH SEA FLAVOURING
  • 8 GRAMS OF FINE SALT
  • 4ML OF NHDC SINERGY
  • 10 DROPS OF BLACK PEPPER ESSENTIAL OIL

In this liquid mixture we will have salmon oil which will act as a really unique fatty acid supplement, the salmon flavouring goes perfectly with this mixture of flours and works very well in the channel. The contribution of flavour will only enhance the fishy taste of the finished bait while the low dosage of sweetener will serve to cover those aftertastes that we inevitably find in fish flours. Finally, a few drops of essential oil will give an extra boost to the flavour profile of the finished bait. During the actual baiting campaign, if we are unable to produce large quantities of bait, we could use good-sized halibut pellets alongside the boilies, which will blend in nicely with the bait made.

With this recipe it will be possible to make good quality bait at a low price and it will allow us to set up a long baiting campaign without tiring the fish out.

See you soon Daniele
