The fishing of mullet is a precision sport: it requires a methodical approach both in terms of the equipment to be used and the exits to be chosen correctly. The cephalus (or mullet) belongs to theMugilidae family and lives mainly in Mediterranean seas or fresh and brackish waters. The perfect season for fishing mullet is from April to July and from September to December. The mullet is not an easy fish to catch as it is by nature very suspicious and its bite is very weak.It is not easy to know the exact moment to hook the fish as you cannot feel when it attaches to the bait.
The mullet is an animal that does not live solitary, but prefers to be in groups. It is important to bait preemptively as you will attract large groups of fish to the area where you will be fishing. Usually a good bait is composed of:
The pasture for mullet is very important to be successful while fishing, but if you do not have a wide selection of ingredients and attractants you will only need two simple ingredients: bread and cheese. These ingredients can be supplemented with other items such as anchovy paste, chopped sardines, fish meal, milk powder or strong cottage cheese. For high-performance baiting, balls formed by compacting the mullet bait should be thrown before fishing begins: it is a good idea to continue throwing smaller balls of bait even while the mullet is being retrieved so as not to arouse the suspicion of the shoal with the risk of driving it away.
First we need to macerate the two cloves of minced garlic in a glass with olive oil for a few hours, while we mix the flour with grated cheese. Separately, we break the eggs and add the garlic-flavored oil: if you want a white batter you will need to use only the egg whites. We add the flour and cheese mixture to the eggs and oil, kneading it to prevent lumps from forming: a firm, chewy paste should be obtained. The paste can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days, for long storage it is recommended to freeze the product.
For an even tastier result, try supplementing the white mullet bait with ground sardines or anchovy paste: you will create a very tasty mixture that will whet the appetite of various groups of mullet.
